YEREVAN, December 16. /ARKA/. Avag Harutyunyan, the chairman of the Union of Winemakers of Armenia, summarizing the results of this year on Wednesday, said that 2015 was not a favorable year for wine and brandy producers in Armenia.
He said he meant exports and added that things in this segment worsened because of devaluation of the Russian ruble that began in October 2014.
«There are no official figures so far, but our estimation shows that brandy exports fell at least 15-20% in 2015, and its prices sank 25%,» Harutyunyan is quoted by tert.am.
He also said that Armenian brandy makers were working with losses throughout the entire year.
«If our producers have refused to export their products to Russian market, they would have to lose their niche, which has been won over 5-7 years,» Harutyunyan said.
In his words, the wine market has the same problems - this segment's exports shrank and prices went down inflicting losses to producers.
Harutyunyan is also quoted by aravot.am as saying that Armenian winemakers sustained 50% losses because of devaluation of the Russian currency.
In his words, if Armenian producers want to avoid similar problems in the future, their deals should be based on barter mechanism – they should pay by goods for goods.
Harutyunyan said that this mechanism was used in 1994 and 1995 in dealing with Turkmenistan.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, wine output in Armenia grew 2% in Jan-Oct 2015, compared with the same period a year before, to 4,451,800 liters, while brandy output shrank 9% to 13,426,400 liters.
The customs service says Armenian wine exports totaled $6.3 million in 2014 – 1.5 times more than in 2013. --0---
