YEREVAN, May 20. /ARKA/. Yerevan residents have been exempted from paying fines and penalties for garbage collection accrued for the period from January to May of this year. This decision was made on Tuesday by the Council of Elders of the capital.

As stated by David Hakobyan, Acting Head of the Department for Accounting and Collection of Revenues of the Yerevan City Hall, on December 24, 2024, a new method for calculating garbage collection tariffs for residential buildings was introduced, and a new electronic system for accounting of citizens was also introduced. He explained that fines accumulated until July 31, 2025 are subject to cancellation.

He said that the decision applies to both individuals (including individual entrepreneurs and payers of licensed fees) and legal entities.

As Hakobyan noted, information on the amounts to be paid is available on the platforms - www.yerevan.am, pay.e-community.am, in all branches of "Haypost", EasyPay payment system, in the branches of Armeconombank.

Vice Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan, for his part, explained that the reform of the garbage payment system will allow adjusting the database.

According to him, it is already possible to pay for garbage online on the above-mentioned platforms. "Other commercial banks, as well as the Telcell payment system, will soon join the program," Hovhannisyan said, adding that if a citizen has already paid and has been assigned a fine, this amount will be transferred to the general account.

About the new methodology

The new procedure for calculating garbage collection fees in Yerevan has been in effect since 2025, leading to an actual increase in tariffs from 7 to 15%. Previously, the fee was calculated based on the number of citizens permanently or temporarily residing in an apartment (house), and since 2025, the calculation is based on the area of the apartment (house).

The average rate for household waste removal in residential buildings was taken as the basis in the amount of 13 drams per 1 sq.m. In accordance with the changes, residents of one-room apartments will pay, on average, 455 drams instead of 400 drams (an increase of 13.75%), two-room apartments - 689 drams instead of 600 drams (an increase of 14.8%), three-room apartments - 975 drams instead of 900 drams (an increase of 8.3%), four-room apartments - 1287 drams instead of 1200 drams (an increase of 7.25%). As for private residential buildings, the increase in payments will amount to 180 drams on average.

It should be noted that the updated information on waste removal payments according to the new methodology became available to Yerevan residents only at the beginning of May (the delay these months was caused by technical reasons).
