Armenian ministry reports tangible rise in emergency situations

The number of reported emergency situations in Armenia increased by 12.5% in 2017, when compared to 2016, Hovhannes Khangeldyan, the head of the National Center for Crisis Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said today.

YEREVAN, January 26. /ARKA/. The number of reported emergency situations in Armenia increased by 12.5% in 2017, when compared to 2016, Hovhannes Khangeldyan, the head of the National Center for Crisis Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said today.

Speaking to reporters he said 14,619 emergency situations were reported last year, killing 356 people and injuring another 10,688.  The number of emergencies in comparison with 2016 grew by 1,627 or 12.5%.

According to him, in 2017 the number of man-made and social-biological emergencies, including fires and road accidents, saw the largest growth. The number of poisoning cases rose by 440.

He noted that unlike the growth in the number of people killed by emergencies which grew by 0.02% as opposed to 2016, the number of those who were injured grew by 1,456 people or 15.8%.

"As in previous years, in 2017, fires, road accidents and poisonings accounted for the greatest number of emergencies - about 95%.  Particularly, the number of fires grew by 916 or 19.8%, "Khangeldyan said. He stressed that the majority of people – more than 80% - or 279 people - died in road accidents. 
Compared to 2016, their number grew by 13 and 5,179 people were injured, by 739 people more.

Regarding the number of natural disasters, their number was less by 100. They killed three people and injured another five.-0-
