Armenia hopes for negotiated settlement to Iran problem: ambassador
YEREVAN, June 30, /ARKA/. In an interview with Moscow-based radio station Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow ) Armenian ambassador to Russia, Oleg Yesayan, said his country hopes for a negotiated settlement of the Iran problem. In his words, Armenia is following closely all developments in neighboring countries, including Iran.
‘No country can remain indifferent to what is happening near its borders,’ he said, adding that Armenia and Iran have traditionally friendly relations and this should not be overlooked.
‘In early 90-s when Armenian was blockaded by Turkey and Azerbaijan, Iran was the only conduit for it to outer world and its importance is hard to overestimate,’ he said.
Earlier his month when addressing the audience at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation headquarters in Berlin during an official visit to Germany Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian urged Western powers to respect Iran’s geopolitical interests in the South Caucasus and referred to Armenia’s economic projects with the Islamic Republic as a model for regional cooperation.
“ I realize that against the backdrop of the sanctions against Iran, some skeptics will doubt my approach, but I am confident that with regard to regional solutions Iran cannot be overlooked or neglected. It is very important for the region to dissipate the Iranian perception of being endangered. Otherwise, there will be no solution – neither for the next day issues nor even for the current nuclear problem.,” he said. -0-
