YEREVAN, March 17. /ARKA/. The united opposition returned to the Liberty Square today, for the first time after tragic events on March 1, 2008, when opposition-minded people headed by former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who lost the 2008 presidential election, took to the streets saying the election was fraudulent and the results were rigged. Ten were killed and 200 injured then. Many were arrested.
Today’s rally started outside Matenadaran, the museum of ancient manuscripts, at 17:20 local time. The police said 9,000 gathered there.
In his speech, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the leader of Armenian National Congress, said that the accumulated social and economic problems had created inflammable situation in the country.
He said that the authorities have proven to be unable to develop the country’s economy and solve problems and time has come for crucial changes.
The rally outside Matenadaran was followed by a march toward the Liberty Square, where Raffi Hovhannisian, MP from Zharangutyun Party, was on hunger strike at the moment.
Levon Zurabyan, coordinators of the Armenian National Congress, called on people to be calm and avoid clashes.
After a shot negotiation with the police, protesters were let in the square. The rally will be continued here.
Stepan Demirchyan, Aram Sargsyan and Aram Karapetyan, leaders of member parties of the Armenian National Congress, are present here.
