About 70 Russian provinces are involved, directly or indirectly, in cooperation processes with Armenia, according to Russian minister for regional development, Viktor Basargin, who was received today by Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian in Yerevan.
YEREVAN, April 18, /ARKA/. About 70 Russian provinces are involved, directly or indirectly, in cooperation processes with Armenia, according to Russian minister for regional development, Viktor Basargin, who was received today by Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian in Yerevan.

The Russian minister has arrived in the Armenian capital city to take part in the first Russian-Armenian interregional forum. The three-day gathering is hosted by Armenia’s largest Karen Demirchian sport and concert hall.

Basargin was quoted by the press service of the Armenian government as saying that 30 Russian provinces have signed cooperation agreements with Armenia and its provinces and more Russian regions seek to sign agreements to develop and execute mid-term and long-term projects.

Tigran Sarkisian was quoted as saying that it was nice to see the initiative of Armenian and Russian presidents to boost inter-regional cooperation materializing. He said the frits results were already apparent.

“I am sure that the first interregional forum will give a fresh push to strengthening and deepening of our relations. We are interested in it and we shall do everything possible to make our ties deeper and stronger,’ he said.

He said regional development was declared by his government as a priority that has political, economic and social significance in terms of further development. Then he spoke about major directions in Armenia’s economic policy. The two men were said to have discussed also some other processes in Armenian-Russian relationships.

The plenary session of the forum is scheduled to open April 19. On the sidelines of the gathering a number of round table discussions will be organized to explore prospects for stepping up infrastructure, energy and humanitarian projects. The two sides are expected to sign a number of agreements. The most important of them is the memorandum to be signed by South Caucasus Railways company operating Armenian railroads and the Armenian government on the construction of a 32 km railway stretch between Armenia’s third largest town of Vanadzor and Fioletovo.

The gathering will be attended by Tigran Sarkisian, Viktor Basargin, Russian transport minister Igor Levitin, heads of Armenian and Russian government agencies, governors, business people, experts and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

A Russian-Armenian fair of innovation is to open today on the fringes of the forum; also Russian Sukhoi air maker will deliver the first Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger aircraft to Armenia’s national carrier Armavia. The South Caucasus Railway will open its renovated and upgraded infrastructure diagnosis centre and officials of both countries will also attend the opening of a monument to Russian soldiers near the town of Etchmiadzin, who died in the 1827-28 Russian-Persian war. -0-
