YEREVAN, April 22. / ARKA /. A prominent Armenian expert in Turkish studies urged the authorities today to revise the methods of struggling against Turkey’s anti-Armenian propaganda. Ruben Melkonian, deputy dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Yerevan State University, said when speaking at a news conference,’ "I think the way we fight against Turkey’s anti-Armenian propaganda is outdated. Turkey’s flexible policy is creating a new situation and we must give an appropriate response."
According to him, in the past Turkey’s denialist policy was "clumsy", but today the Turkish government is trying to create a simulation of attempts to recognize the historical truth.
"This is intended to ensure that third countries do not interfere in the process," he added, expressing confidence that the Armenian lobby in the Diaspora will find methods of counteraction.
The Armenian Genocide of 1915 was the first genocide in the twentieth century. Turkey has denied accusations of mass killings of 1.5 million Armenians during the First World War and is extremely sensitive to criticism from the West regarding the Armenian genocide issue.
The fact of the Armenian genocide is recognized by many states. It was first recognized in 1965 by Uruguay. Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Chile, Argentina, 42 U.S. states have also recognized it. The Armenian Genocide is recognized also by Vatican, the European Parliament, the World Council of Churches. -0-
