US Congress might adopt resolution 106 now, russian expert says
YEREVAN, November 26. /ARKA-Novosti-Armenia/. The US Congress might adopt Resolution 106 on the Armenian Genocide now, President of the Institute of Strategic Assessments Alexander Konovalov stated during the Yerevan-Moscow space bridge “New eastern question: Ankara and Yerevan under USA’s pressure”. The space bridge was organized by the RIA Novosti and Novosti-Armenia.
According to him, numerous attempts to adopt a resolution on the Armenian Genocide have been made in the USA, but things have not gone beyond the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives.
“At present, the resolution has been recommended for adoption by the House of Representatives, and a unique situation has developed, when it might be adopted, as most of the Congressmen are democrats, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi was ready to put it to vote,” Konovalov said. He added that it was not done, as the executive power launched an all-out attack against the Congress.
Konovalov expressed the opinion that there is no point for the USA in aggravating its relations with Turkey, which is of critical importance for the USA. 70% of the US military contingent in, and 30% of fuel supply to, Iraq are transported through Injerlik in Turkey. And Turkey has a unique opportunity to exert pressure on the USA and is succeeding,” Konovalov said.
He pointed out that the USA has assumed a most pragmatic position. The US Government is not very much interested in what happened in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. It is much more interested in the resolving specific problems facing it and overcoming the prospective difficulties, in case they start the process of adopting the resolution thereby undermining its relations with one of their principal allies.
Konovalov believes the USA’s national interest is not mere interest. “America has fallen into a trap, and it is most important for the US Government to free itself from this trap with credit, but to adopt the resolution or conform to democratic values,” Konovalov said.
According to him, “even when the US Congress takes any steps in relation to the Armenian Genocide, they do it not out of love for Armenians, and even not out of love for democratic values, but to receive the votes of each national community in the USA. This step has been done to show the Armenian community that the Congress remembers, know, loves and wants to deal with this issue. But the executive power is urgently advising not to do it now,” Konovalov said.
Resolution 106 (House Resolution) was submitted to the House of Representatives of the US Congress on January 30, 2007. P.T. –0--
