YEREVAN, December 20. /ARKA/. About 50 Armenian prisoners of war have been officially confirmed as being still held in Azerbaijan, Armenian human rights activist Siranush Sahakyan. who represents the interests of the captives at the European Court of Human Rights, said today.

She added that according to many estimates, there are about another 80 Armenian captives being held in Azerbaijan, but whose status has not been officially confirmed.

Sahakyan also noted that the repatriation of the confirmed Armenian prisoners is inevitable through the mediation of Russia, the U.S., France or other states.

On December 19, the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported the return of 10 Armenian prisoners of war from Azerbaijan with the mediation of European Council President Charles Michel, following his talks with Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in Brussels on December 15.

Azerbaijani authorities had previously released 10 service members earlier this month as part of a deal mediated by Russia after they were detained on Nov. 16. In exchange for the prisoners, Armenia provided Azerbaijan with maps to mines placed on the Azerbaijani side of the border during the first Karabakh war in 1992-94.

Since the end of last autumn war in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone several dozens of Armenian captives have been repatriated from Azerbaijan and 16 Azerbaijanis from Armenia. -0-
