YEREVAN, May 24. /ARKA/. Acting on a formal request by Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has stripped Alen Simonyan of a mandate of a member of the Council of Elders of Yerevan (the capital city’s legislative assembly), CEC press secretary Hermine Harutyunyan told ARKA.
She said the CEC will provide the vacated mandate to the candidate, who comes next after Simonyan on the list of the Yelk faction.
In response to the mayor’s move Simonyan said on his Facebook page that Margaryan did so using all possible and impossible legislative omissions and pitfalls.
"This is illegal, because in fact I was not given the opportunity to make a choice, and he (the mayor) did so based not on legal grounds, but to get rid of me," Simonyan said. He noted that he will continue to deal with the problems of Yerevan, ‘because this is city where I was born, grew up and live.’
"It's sad that Margaryan and the Republican Party of Armenia are trying to fight with me by such methods. I will not succeed. I will persevere in my activity and you will see it soon," he said, noting that he will attend the next meeting of the Council of Elders.
Alen Simonyan resigned one day after taking an oath of parliament member. Simonyan became a parliament member after several parliamentarians from Yelk resigned after being appointed to various positions in the government. Simonyan explained his move by the desire to continue serving as a member of the Council of Elders. -0--
