Alen Simonyan: there is atmosphere of distrust between Armenia and Azerbaijan
YEREVAN, May 29. /ARKA/. According to a preliminary agreement, the next meeting of the Presidents of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Parliaments will be held in mid-May, Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said summarizing the results of his meeting with the Head of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova held on March 22.
At the same time, he noted that during the meeting the sides came to the conclusion that there is an atmosphere of distrust.
"They do not trust us, they say we will attack. She tried to assure me that no provocation was being prepared on their part, and I objected, saying 'why buy so many weapons in such a case?' She in turn accused Armenia of buying weapons and a small argument started," Simonyan told Armenian Public Television.
According to Simonyan, he told Gafarova that Armenia was closely watching the bellicose statements of official Baku, particularly Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
"This led to the conclusion that we should try to reduce distrust to an understandable level," he explained.
The speaker noted that it was decided to start contacts at the parliamentary level.
"I said I will discuss these issues with our team. She also expressed willingness to discuss this issue with their team," he said. -0-
