YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. Any U.S. aid is existentially important for Armenian statehood, Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan said at a joint press conference with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Yerevan today.

Prior to her visit Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that the ‘Congressional delegation’s visit to Armenia is a powerful symbol of the United States’ firm commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Armenia, and a stable and secure Caucasus region.’

"We believe that clear-cut sanctions can be another lever to stop Azerbaijan's expansionist ambitions and war of authoritarianism against democracy," Simonyan said.

He noted that a wide range of bilateral relations and regional issues were discussed at a meeting with the U.S. Congressional delegation on Sunday.

"The visit to Yerevan by Mrs. Pelosi, whose assistance we have always felt in the most difficult and sensitive moments, is very important for us in this most difficult period. During the meeting we talked about Azerbaijan's September 13 military aggression," said Simonyan.

He informed the U.S. Congress members that the Azerbaijani armed forces bombed not only Armenian border positions, but also numerous civilian settlements and infrastructures, which caused numerous casualties," Simonyan said.

He pointed out that Azerbaijan's military and political leadership takes advantage of the fact that the international community's attention is focused on the events in Ukraine.

"We are grateful to the United States for its efforts and mediation, thanks to which a fragile ceasefire agreement was reached on September 14," said Simonyan, thanking numerous U.S. congressmen for their targeted assessment of Azerbaijani aggression.

Simonyan also highly appreciated the activity of the members of the Armenian Caucus of the US Congress, highlighting the development of the inter-parliamentary ties of the legislative bodies of Armenia and USA.

"The sides consider important the further cooperation in expanding the democratic values," said Simonyan. -0-
