YEREVAN, April 24. /ARKA/. The Armenian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

"On this day, we pay tribute and honor the memory of 1.5 million Armenians who fell victim to the genocide. During the last period of the Ottoman Empire, a significant part of the Armenian people was exterminated solely on the basis of their nationality, their property was appropriated, and a significant part of the rich historical and cultural heritage of many thousands of years was destroyed," the document says.

It is noted that, among other things, the awareness of the imperative of preventing crimes such as the Armenian Genocide led to the need for a legal definition of the crime of genocide, which was expressed in the adoption of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. However, unfortunately, not only did the Medz Yeghern not remain the last crime against humanity in the 20th century, but in the 21st century we continue to witness new mass crimes based on hatred, racial and ethnic intolerance,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry noted that Armenia continues to actively participate in initiatives aimed at early detection of signs of such crimes, prompt response, their prevention and prevention in the future.

In 2015, thanks to Armenia’s efforts, December 9 was included in the list of UN international days as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. In continuation of the resolutions adopted in previous years, in April 2024, at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the resolution “Prevention of Genocide” submitted by Armenia was adopted by consensus. All these efforts are aimed at turning “Never Again” from a slogan into reality.

"The Republic of Armenia today remembers the past and looks to the future, striving to build an environment for future generations free from discrimination and violence, based on the values of tolerance, respect, protection of human rights and peace," the Armenian MFA noted.
