YEREVAN, March 3. /ARKA/. The management of railways in Armenia is currently being discussed with the Russian side, stated Alen Simonyan, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
"We expect a response as soon as possible. The project is of significant importance, and therefore we have no alternative but to discuss and address this issue," Simonyan said at a briefing on Tuesday.
According to him, some countries are showing some interest in this direction, but negotiations are ongoing and a final decision has not yet been made.
Since 2008, South Caucasus Railways (SCR), a subsidiary of Russian Railways, has held a 30-year concessionaire for the Armenian railways.
Regarding the Armenian Railway
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not rule out the possibility of Russia selling the right to manage Armenian railways to another country friendly to Armenia and Russia, specifically Qatar, the UAE, or Kazakhstan.
Pashinyan also stated that, as part of the TRIPP project, several countries are proposing to build a railway link between Nakhchivan and the mainland of Azerbaijan, bypassing Armenia, pointing out that the Armenian railway is managed by a Russian company.
According to him, due to Russia's control of the Armenian railway, "Armenia is losing its competitive advantage."
