Armenia does not oppose deepening of its relations with the EU to its relations with other partners - Pashinyan
YEREVAN, March 13./ARKA/. Armenia does not oppose the deepening of its relations with the European Union to its relations with other partners, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.
“At the same time, the interesting fact, if we take a close look at our region, is the current reality that two out of four of our neighbors are candidates for EU membership. And I want to say that this process also does not contradict our regionalization policy,” he said in an interview with Turkish media.
At the same time, the prime minister noted that Armenia understands that the EU accession process is a complicated process and stressed that Armenia wants to overcome the foreign policy of lack of alternatives.
“One of our most important tasks is to overcome the lack of alternatives of a balanced foreign policy and come to a place where we can look more closely at our region, look more closely at the world, look more closely at opportunities, analyze threats more closely, but also see opportunities,” he said.
On Armenia's accession process to the EU
On January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a civic initiative to start accession to the EU, proposed by the the Platform of Democratic Forces consisting of 4 extra-parliamentary parties and several civic movements.
In order for the draft law to be submitted to the Parliament, they collected more than 52,000 signatures of Armenian citizens.
On February 12 a it was approved by the National Assembly in the first reading. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia can become a member of the EU only if the people approve this initiative in a referendum. He pointed to the need to discuss and develop a joint roadmap with the EU. -0-
