Armenia has no intention to leave the EAEU - NA speaker

YEREVAN, January 21. /ARKA/. Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan stated that Armenia does not seek to leave the EAEU.

"This process (of Armenia's accession to the EU) is the will of the people, and we will discuss the will of the people in the National Assembly. We will discuss, vote, and make a decision. I do not think the Russian side should be overly concerned about this, and I do not think that combining cooperation will be a problem," Simonyan told journalists.

According to him, if this becomes an issue for the Russian side, then "there are no matters that the Armenian side would not be ready to discuss."

"Armenia is a sovereign country and makes its own decisions regarding what is in its best interests... The EAEU is an economically beneficial organization, and we have no desire to leave the EAEU," Simonyan said.

On January 9, the government of Armenia approved a proposal for Armenia's accession to the EU, initiated by the civil initiative "Platform of Democratic Forces." As Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted, Armenia can only become a member of the EU if the people approve this initiative in a referendum. He emphasized the need to discuss and develop a joint "roadmap" with the EU.

On Russia's position

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described Armenia's decision to begin the process of joining the EU as its sovereign choice. "However, weighing all the pros and cons is also the responsibility of the Armenian government, the leadership, and those involved in the economic sector," he said.
