YEREVAN, July 16. /ARKA/. Armenia has expressed a desire to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.
"This fits into the logic of our balanced policy," he said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Pashinyan recalled that Armenia has observer status in the SCO.
"This (Armenia's intention to become a member of the SCO - ed.) is also connected with structural and substantive changes in the organization - discussions are underway to eliminate the status of observers or associate members," he said.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in 2001. The organization includes ten states: Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India, Iran, Belarus (since 2024). Observers at the SCO are Afghanistan and Mongolia. The SCO dialogue partners are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Egypt, Cambodia, Qatar, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Sri Lanka.
The meeting of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in late August - early September 2025 in China.
