YEREVAN, December 9. /ARKA/. Armenia's European orientation is the result of natural selection and follows from the agenda of democratic reforms in our state, said Armenian NA Speaker Alen Simonyan at the opening of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights meeting in Yerevan.

“Armenia, with its past and present, is an integral part of European civilization, grounded in a common system of values and a unique cultural and historical heritage,” Simonyan said.

He stressed that the ongoing reforms in the country are also a cornerstone of the security and are directly linked to steps aimed at achieving peace in the region, which can be realized through the development of a sovereign, stable, and democratic state, as well as respect for the fundamental principles of human rights and international law.

Simonyan highly praised the response and actions of the Council of Europe bodies concerning the needs of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh. “It is crucial to ensure international protection for the displaced population, including under the framework of the Council of Europe convention. The focus is on the issue of the repatriation of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan,” he noted.

As the Chairman of the Armenian Parliament stated, Armenia, despite the existing challenges, is making active efforts to establish stable and lasting peace in the region. “In the context of regulating relations with Azerbaijan, we have ratified the first-ever international legal document (regulation) between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The joint work of the two commissions dealing with border demarcation is based on the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991, which means that the borders established during the Soviet Union are defined by this document,” Simonyan emphasized.

According to him, as an important component of the peace agenda, Armenia has initiated the “Crossroads of Peace” project, which serves as a roadmap for achieving lasting peace. The project is aimed at effectively unblocking regional communications and ensuring sustainable economic development based on the principles of reciprocity, equality, the jurisdiction of states, sovereignty, and legislation.-0-
