Armenia and European Union initial Agreement on Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership
YEREVAN, March 21. /ARKA/. Armenia and the European Union have initialed today the Agreement on Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership, the Armenian foreign ministry said.

It said the agreement was signed by Armenian deputy foreign minister Karen Mirzoyan and deputy minister of economic development and Investment Garegin Melkonyan. On the EU side it was signed by Luc Davis, director for Russia, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and the OSCE of the European External Action Service, and Petros Sourmelis, head of the European Commission's Trade Directorate.

Armenian foreign minister Edward Nalbandian noted during the meeting with his European counterparts that the agreement will be signed within a year. He said it will reflect the depth, level and scope of the relations between Armenia and the EU.

Armenia and the EU launched talks on a new framework agreement on December 7, 2015 after EU Foreign Affairs Council authorized the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new legal basis for relations with Armenia on October 13.

Armenia and the EU were supposed to sign the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) at a 2013 November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius but on September 3 President Sargsyan announced that the country was going to become part of the Russian-led Customs Union. The new agreement will replace the current agreement on partnership and cooperation between the EU and Armenia. -0-
