Armenia slipped down seven spots in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2018 compared with that of the last year, being ranked 120th out of 163 countries.

YEREVAN, June 6. /ARKA/. Armenia slipped down seven spots in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2018 compared with that of the last year, being ranked 120th out of 163 countries.
The 12th annual ‘Global Peace Index” prepared by Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a Sydney-based independent non-profit think tank, scored 163 independent states and territories according to their levels of peacefulness.
Armenia is located between Turkmenistan (119th place) and USA (121st place). Despite the decline in the index, Armenia remains among the countries with average level of peace. The GPI says that a relative decline in tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan after the clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh in 2016 April led to an improvement in the assessment of the country in terms of external conflicts. However, the overall decline was prompted by the increased likelihood of demonstrations against the government earlier this year against the background of high risks of price growth.
According to the report, in the "Russia and Eurasia" group, which includes 12 countries, Armenia is located in the ninth place. Moldova is 64th, Kazakhstan is 70th and Belarus is 101st, followed by Georgia - 102nd, Uzbekistan -104th, Kyrgyzstan -108th, Tajikistan - 114th and Turkmenistan - 119th. Outsiders in this regional group are Azerbaijan -132nd, Ukraine -152nd and Russia -154th.
The index reveals that the world is less peaceful today than at any time in the past decade with 92 countries seeing their scores deteriorate and 71 improving.
Levels of peace are determined across a five-point scale through three filters - safety and security in society, ongoing domestic or international conflict and the degree of militarization. Iceland was ranked the most peaceful country worldwide in 2018, followed by New Zealand and Austria. Syria is at the opposite end of the scale, along with Afghanistan and South Sudan. -0-
