YEREVAN, June 30. /ARKA/. Armenia’s debts to international organizations have been slashed by five times, foreign minister Edward Nalbandian stated on Friday during the parliamentary hearings on the 2016 state budget execution. According to him, Armenia is a member of 96 international organizations, having paid last year about $5 million in membership fees. "We are paying not only annual membership fees, but also debts for previous years, the bulk of which has accumulated since 1998," Nalbandian said.

The minister noted that nine years ago the debt stood at $9.2 million, but by the end of 2016 it had already fallen to $1.8 million, having decreased five-fold. He said the Armenian foreign ministry has reached an agreement with each of the international organizations to reduce costs and draw up a repayment schedule.

"If there is a debt, the country is deprived of the right to vote in these organizations, but we managed to retain this right as a result of negotiations, despite the debts," Nalbandian said.

According to him, today Armenia is indebted only to three organizations - WHO, UNIDO and the International Labor Organization. The annual membership fee to each of them is about $50 thousand.

"We could repay part of the debts by the funds saved in 2016, but each organization has its own restrictions on the possibility of annual payments," Nalbandian said. ($ 1 - 480.69 Drams). --0--
