YEREVAN, June 28. /ARKA/. Armenia’s defense minister Vigen Sargsyan expressed today his negative stance on the latest delivery of arms to Azerbaijan by Yerevan’s strategic ally Russia. According to media reports, Russia has resumed weaponry supply to Azerbaijan by delivering a batch of antitank missile systems called Chrysanthemum-S.
"I am against all arms deliveries to Azerbaijan, first of all, because Azerbaijan is an unpredictable country because of the lack of mechanisms of democratic control there," Sargsyan added.
"From this point of view, whether they are Russian or Israeli armament, their deliveries create major risks, since it is difficult to foresee who will make decisions in this country in the near future," Sargsyan said.
At the same time the minister said Armenian is pleased with the interaction with the Russian Federation in the military sphere.
"We have a program of military-technical and military-political cooperation with Russia, which is conditioned by allied relations and strategic partnership; and we are satisfied with the progress in its implementation. This is a very ambitious program that we regularly expand," Sargsyan added.
"We buy weapons from Russia as part of military-technical cooperation as allies at Russian domestic prices, which is very important to us," Sargsyan said.
He also said Armenia is ready to consider the possibility of acquiring weapons from Israel. "The acquisition of weapons from a country can never be an end in itself; the goal is the preservation of combat capability of the armed forces," Sargsyan said. -0-
