YEREVAN, May 3. /ARKA/. Armenia’s government rejected on May 2 a motion by an MP Sergey Bagratyan from the Prosperous Armenia party suggesting that the country’s National Assembly hold its sessions twice a year in the regions.

Justice Minister Artak Zeynalyan argued that the passage of a relevant bill would entail large expenses and difficulties and would run counter to the government’s strategy of "proportional development of the regions".

The minister referred to paragraph 2 of the National Assembly's Regulations, which says that the National Assembly’s sessions are convened in the parliament building at 19, Baghramyan St., Yerevan , while sessions outside  the walls of the parliament can be convened by a decision of the National Assembly’s Council or by the speaker of the parliament.

With this in mind, the Minister said the motion, if passed, would be a disproportionate burden on the budget and would threaten the safety of lawmakers.

Zeynalyan noted that according to the current legislation, the standing committees can hold their sessions outside the walls of the parliament building, if necessary. --0--
