YEREVAN, July 1. /ARKA/. Armenia launched a program worth 300,000 euros on reducing the use of imprisonment as required by the European standards.

The program will last 12 months and will aim at adapting Armenian prison system to the European regulations and CE recommendations, head of CE Yerevan office Oleksander Pavliuk said during the presentation Monday.

The program is implemented by the Council of Europe with support from Armenian Government and funding from the government of Norway. The project is a part of Armenia’s action plan for 2012-2014 signed between the country’s foreign ministry and the CE last year.

The program will end on May 1, 2014. Project manager of CE Yerevan office Hayk Khemchyan said the program will continue if the first stage is successfully completed.–0--
