Armenia’s parliamentary speaker: OSCE Minsk Group dissolution can be discussed after Yerevan, Baku sign peace treaty

YEREVAN, June 7. /ARKA/. The dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group can only be discussed after Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace treaty, President of Armenia’s National Assembly Alen Simonyan said on Friday.
Azerbaijan’s leader Ilham Aliyev said on Thursday that Yerevan and Baku should address the OSCE to initiate the dissolution of the Minsk Group, created in 1992 to encourage a peaceful, negotiated resolution of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. Aliyev also demanded amendments to the Armenian Constitution, calling it an essential condition for the peace treaty.
Simonyan also said that Armenia puts its efforts towards the peace treaty. “The dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group can only be discussed once the treaty is signed. If Azerbaijan continues to accuse Armenia of having any territorial claims or demands, there is no point in a peace treaty,” he stressed.
The parliamentary speaker also revealed that if the two countries are close to signing the treaty and agree on its key principles, then “there should be no reason for Aliyev to sabotage the peace talks.”
Additionally, Simonyan commented on Aliyev’s demands regarding the Armenian Constitution. “This is Armenia’s domestic matter. We have long been discussing amendments to the Constitution, although in a different context, and we have believed since 2018 that a change is needed,” he concluded.
