YEREVAN, September 9, /ARKA/. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) nominated late on September 8 Karen Karapetyan, a former Yerevan mayor, for the post of Armenia’s prime minister, hours after the resignation of prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan.
‘The Republican Party of Armenia expects the new government to continue the reforms,’ said deputy chairman of the party Armen Ashotyan after a meeting of the HHK Executive Body.
"We expect it to continue reforms and create opportunities - from a favorable investment environment to structural changes in the economy- for long-term growth", he said.
Speaking at the meeting president Serzh Sargsyan said the party has chosen Karapetyan because of his deep awareness of economic issues, the energy sector, Yerevan’s municipal affairs and other fields and given his governance skills and personal traits.
The president also said he expects the new government to embark on sweeping reforms that would “give new impetus to economic development.”
‘The new government of Armenia will be endowed with great freedom and great responsibility,’ Sargsyan said.
‘It must restore the broadest trust in the authorities and find unconventional solutions for our economy and public life, which will bolster Armenia’s positions in the region.’
Karen Karapetyan was born on August 14, 1963. In 1985 he graduated from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics of Yerevan State University. He has a PhD degree in economics.
He taught at the Yerevan State University, worked as a deputy director of Armenergo energy company (1996-1998), and later as its CEO (1998-2001), and then as deputy energy minister.
In 2001-2010 he served as CEO of Armenia’s national gas distributing company ArmRosgazprom (now "Gazprom Armenia", a 100% subsidiary of the Russian "Gazprom"), and then from December 2010 to October 2011 he was mayor of Yerevan.
In December of the same year he was appointed first vice-president of Russian "Gazprombank". Since November 2012 he served as Deputy General Director of "Gazprom Mezhregiongaz" company.
He was awarded the medal of "Anania Shirakatsi". He is married and has three children. -0-
