YEREVAN, July 2. /ARKA/. Tigran Balayan, a spokesman for the Armenian foreign ministry, slammed today Azerbaijan for what he described as ‘irresponsible actions’ demonstrated in its exclave Nakhichevan.
Balayan’s remarks followed a skirmish between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops on the border between Nakhichevan and Armenia. According to Balayan, Azerbaijani troops attempted to build new engineering structures to strengthen their positions on June 30 and July 1. The Armenian troops fired back destroying and burning one of the enemy's positions. An Armenian contract serviceman Vahagn Baghdasaryan (born in 1974) was slightly wounded in the skirmish, according to Balayan..
He said also that Azerbaijan’s irresponsibility is nothing new, as it again failed to fulfill its obligations. ‘We have been raising this issue during the meetings with the OSCE Minsk co-chairs and other partner countries and organizations," Balayan told a briefing on Monday.
Balayan said it is the co-chairs who will have to do a great work , because by its actions Azerbaijan, first of all, shows disrespect towards them.
Balayan also commented on the possibility of seeking help from the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member countries. Armenia is a CSTO member.
"Regarding the deployment of a joint contingent of CSTO forces on the border, we do not believe that the Armenian armed forces need help in maintaining full control of the border with Nakhichevan," he said.
Balayan also slammed Azerbaijan for holding military exercises without preliminary notification about it. "There are various formats where this issue is being raised, but the problem is that the available agreements that provide for notification of military exercises, have no sanction mechanism in case of violation of these agreements," Balayan said. -0-
