Armenian government endorses economic agreement with Hungary

YEREVAN, December 19. /ARKA/. The Armenian government approved an agreement on economic cooperation with Hungary at a meeting on Thursday.

As stated in the rationale for the decision, this agreement will help develop long-term economic ties in areas such as trade, tourism, energy, transport, agriculture, and more.

The document also outlines the creation of an Armenian-Hungarian intergovernmental commission to promote economic cooperation.

On Armenian-Hungarian Relations

Armenia severed diplomatic relations with Hungary in 2012 after Hungary extradited Ramil Safarov, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary for the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan and was later pardoned upon his return to Azerbaijan.

On December 1, 2022, the foreign ministers of Armenia and Hungary agreed to restore full diplomatic relations.

In May 2023, after 11 years without diplomatic ties, the two countries appointed non-resident ambassadors: Anna Maria Shiko became Hungary's ambassador to Armenia (residing in Tbilisi), and Ashot Smbatyan became Armenia's ambassador to Hungary (also serving concurrently as the Ambassador of Armenia to Georgia, with residence in Tbilisi).

In May 2024, Armenia and Hungary agreed to mutually open resident embassies.
