Armenian justice minister says linking constitutional amendments with external threat wrong

YEREVAN, July 24./ARKA/. Armenian Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan said that linking the planned constitutional changes to any external factor is wrong.
"This is our internal issue. The people will decide whether or not they want a new constitution," Galyan said at a press briefing on Thursday when asked about Azerbaijan's demand that Armenia amend its constitution, which Baku argues has territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
Galyan said that amending the Constitution or holding a referendum on adopting a new constitution will not happen before the 2026 parliamentary elections.
"We must ensure that the new text of the constitution is ready before the 2026 elections," she said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly emphasized that the Armenian Constitution contains no territorial claims against Azerbaijan or any other country. However, the Azerbaijani Constitution contains territorial claims against Armenia.
Azerbaijan demands changes to the Armenian constitution and the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group as preconditions for signing the peace treaty that has been agreed upon by the sides.
The next parliamentary elections in Armenia will be held in June 2026.-0-
