Armenian central election commission: 51.53% turnout in parliamentary elections by 17:00 local time

YEREVAN, May 6. /АРКА/. Some 1,300,117 voters or 51.53% of people eligible to vote visited polling stations in Armenia for parliamentary elections by 17:00 local time, said Armen Smbatyan, secretary of the central electoral commission.

YEREVAN, May 6. /АРКА/. Some 1,300,117 voters or 51.53% of people eligible to vote visited polling stations in Armenia for parliamentary elections by 17:00 local time, said Armen Smbatyan, secretary of the central electoral commission.

In Yerevan, 390,170 or 47.94% voted.

Voter turnout in Aragatsotn province was 58% (66,819 people), in Ararat province 60.33% (128,162), in Armavir 44.32% (98,665), in Gegharkunik 56.5% (105,219), in Lori 49.19% (116,284), in Kotayk 54.15% (125,373), in Shirak 47.156% (107,863), in Syunik 61.03% (74,566), in Vayots Dzor 56.53% (26,781) and in Tavush 55.4% (60,144).

The country’s 1982 polling stations will close today at 20:00.

The elections are being contested by eight political parties and one electoral bloc. They are three coalition parties - the Republican Party of Armenia, Bargavach Hayastan (Prosperous Armenia) and Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law), the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), Zharangutyun (Heritage), which has a combined list with Free Democrats, the Armenian National Congress (electoral bloc), the Democratic Party of Armenia, the Armenian Communist Party and the United Armenians party.

Armenia’s parliament (National Assembly) consists of 131 deputies (41 deputies are elected in individual races (single-mandate constituencies) and 90 through party lists. To enter the National Assembly, political parties need to overcome the 5% threshold. The barrier for alliances is 7%. Forty-one single-mandate seats are being contested by 137 candidates. -0-
