YEREVAN, January 4, /ARKA/ Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the killing of a top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a US-ordered drone strike at Baghdad airport early Friday, saying in a statement that Armenia is seriously concerned about the recent incidents in Baghdad which led to human losses.

“They risk further undermining the regional security and destabilizing the situation in the Middle East and beyond. Armenia calls for the de-escalation of situation exclusively through peaceful means. Armenia will continue to closely cooperate with all its partners aimed at ensuring regional stability and security,” it said.

Soleimani was the head of Iran's elite Quds Force. Iran has vowed to retaliate against the US airstrike, calling the move America's "biggest mistake in West Asia" and threatening "severe vengeance". The killing has provoked a major escalation in US-Iran tensions. Iran's Supreme National Security Council has issued a statement vowing to retaliate "in the right place and time".  The Pentagon said president Trump ordered the killing of Soleimani "in a decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad".

In a related statement Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia has government institutions, capable of monitoring the developments across the region, analyzing the events, and if necessary, taking steps based on the situation.
He said in a Facebook post that all necessary instructions have already been given to appropriate bodies. -0-
