Armenian government approves opening embassy in Uruguay

YEREVAN, July 20. /ARKA/. Armenia will open an embassy in Uruguay. A decision to that end was made on Thursday at the session of the government.

"This decision is prompted by warm relations between Armenia and Uruguay, as well as by the presence of an influential Armenian community in Uruguay," the government said.

The agreement on the opening of the Armenian embassy in Uruguay was reached during the visit of the Uruguayan Foreign Minister to Armenia in August 2021. The Uruguayan diplomatic mission operates in Yerevan at the embassy level.

Uruguay is the first country in the world, which in 1965 officially recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The local Armenian community is one of the oldest in South America, numbering almost 20,000 people. --0—
