YEREVAN, September 19. /ARКА/. The Armenian government is discussing an Azerbaijani proposal on the exchange of prisoners, Vladimir Karapetyan, a spokesman for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, told reporters on Thursday.

Earlier, the Azerbaijani State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Citizens said that Azerbaijan was ready to exchange Armenian citizens Karen Ghazaryan and Araik Ghazaryan. who are held  in Azerbaijan as prisoners for Azerbaijanis Dilgam Askerov and Shahbaz Quliyev.

The Azeris were sentenced to  life imprisonment and 22 years in prison by a court in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in 2014.

"I didn’t speak personally with the prime minister, but the issue is being discussed. Given the subtleties of the issue, we will announce the decision publicly when we are close to it," Karapetyan said.

On August 12, a soldier of the Artsakh (Karabakh) Defense Army, Araik Ghazaryan, born in 2000, left his military unit in unclear circumstances. According to Azeri news outlets, Ghazaryan is in Azerbaijan. The Armenian Ministry of Defense later confirmed that information.

In July 2018, under unknown circumstances, a resident of the village of Berdavan, Tavush region of Armenia Karen Ghazaryan, who is said to have health problems, ended up in Azerbaijan. Most likely, he got lost, but in Azerbaijan he was declared a saboteur. On February 27, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Dilgam Askerov and Shahbaz Quliyev were convicted of illegal border crossing and arms possession, espionage and kidnapping. Askerov, who was jailed for life, was also found guilty of killing Smbat Tsakanyan, a 17-year-old Armenian resident of the Kelbajar district.  The Azeris killed also Armenian army officer, Sargis Abrahamyan, and wounded  gravely the 37-year-old woman, Karine Davtyan -0-
