YEREVAN, April 26. /ARKA/. Everything is negotiable if there is a country that needs natural gas and there is a country that supplies gas and there are no obstacles. Babken Tunyan, head of an Armenian parliament Committee on Economic Affairs from the ruling Civil Contract part, said in a comment on the probability of buying gas from Azerbaijan.

“At the moment there are no arrangements or preliminary agreements. Armenia, like any other country, makes no difference where to buy energy resource from. It should buy it from where it is cheaper and more profitable. And risks arise when your energy security is low and you have only one source,” Tunyan said.

He noted that Armenia is working on diversification of gas supplies, but supplies from Iran and Russia fully cover the current needs. Such an issue is not on the agenda at the moment, and it is necessary to establish relations with Azerbaijan before starting discussions on gas purchases.

“Our policy is that we should reduce our dependence on gas sources and emphasize nuclear, renewable and solar energy,” Tunyan said.

In October 2023, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan said Armenia was ready to restore gas pipelines from Azerbaijan in the absence of political issues.

Armenia currently buys gas from Russia for domestic needs and also receives gas from Iran in exchange for supplying electricity to Iran. -0-
