Armenian ombudsman’s resignation accepted by parliament

The Armenian National Assembly has accepted today Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan’s resignation, and a new ombudsman will be elected within one month, Armenian Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan said Monday after he opened the ninth parliamentary session.
YEREVAN, February 1. /ARKA/. The Armenian National Assembly has accepted today Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan’s resignation, and a new ombudsman will be elected within one month, Armenian Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan said Monday after he opened the ninth parliamentary session.
Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan submitted his second resignation request to the National Assembly on January 18 confirming his decision to quit the office.
The first application was filed on January 13, 2016.
In accordance with the law, the ombudsman is relieved from duty if he submits his second resignation application to the National Assembly no later than in ten days after the first one.
If early dismissal of the ombudsman is approved by a simple majority of MPs, in one month after that another ombudsman is elected.
Earlier, explaining the resignation on his Facebook page, Andreasyan said if he remained in office also in 2016, this important institution will stop functioning effectively in the country.
Apologizing to everybody whose expectations he deceived, Andreasyan expressed hope that new laws that are expected to be adopted as part of the constitutional reform will provide room for solving many problems in human rights protection.
Andreasyan, the third ombudsman of Armenia, has worked in office since March 2, 2011. ---0----
