Armenian opposition resumes civil disobedience campaign in Yerevan
YEREVAN, May 3. /ARKA/. Opposition activists and supporters have resumed today morning what they call ‘civil disobedience campaign ’ blocking streets and street intersections in central Yerevan, creating traffic havoc.
On Sunday, supporters of two major opposition alliances- Hayastan and Pativ Unem- formally led by ex-presidents Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan- set up tents in a downtown square for a round-the-clock protest, saying they wouldn't leave until Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his team step down.
The most active of the demonstrators are representatives of youth organizations of the ARF/Dashnaktsutyun and the Republican Party of Armenia.
The activists use loudspeakers chanting Nikol the traitor," "Armenia without Nikol," and urge other citizens to join the protest.
Riot police began detaining anti-government demonstrators, particularly on Komitas Avenue. On Monday police detained more than 200 anti-government demonstrators.
The opposition accuses Pashinyan of planning to hand over Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan. Addressing parliament on April 13, Pashinyan said the international community was pressing Armenia to lower the bar regarding the Karabakh’s status and recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. --0--
