Armenian parliament eliminates draft deferment

The Armenian parliament has passed today in the first reading a bill on Military Service and the Status of Serviceman, which as a matter of fact, eliminates the draft deferment.

YEREVAN, October 27. /ARKA/. The Armenian parliament has passed today in the first reading a bill on Military Service and the Status of Serviceman, which as a matter of fact, eliminates the draft deferment. The bill was backed by 89 lawmakers, the bulk from the governing Republican Party of Armenia (HHK). The only faction in the parliament that voted against the bill was the opposition Yelk party.
According to defense minister Vigen Sargsyan, the bill, if passed in the final reading and signed into law, would grant draft deferment to only those citizens who would agree to serve in the armed forces as officers after the graduation for 36 months.
These students will be receiving the salary of junior career officer as well as reimbursement of their tuition fees, both for bachelor's and master’s degrees.
According to the new bill, the period of compulsory military service remains unchanged - 24 months, while contact servicemen will have to serve 36 months. Under the bill, citizens who have lost their parents or citizens who has disabled parents will receive two vacations. -0-
