Armenian parliament fails second attempt to elect third deputy speaker
YEREVAN, August 5. /ARKA/. Armenia’s new parliament, elected in the June 20 early elections, failed again today to elect the third deputy speaker representing the opposition.
Ishkhan Saghatelyan nominated by the Hayastan (Armenia) and Pativ Unem (I have Honor) alliances for the post was backed by 49 lawmakers and as many voted against him.
In the first voting earlier today Saghatelyan was backed by 53 votes while 50 lawmakers voted against and one vote was declared invalid. To be elected, Saghatelyan needed 54 votes.
Armenia’s National Assembly comprises the Civil Contract party, which won 53.91% of the votes (71 seats), the Hayastan (Armenia) bloc (29 seats), and the Pativ Unem (I have Honor) bloc (7 seats).
The parliament consists of 107 lawmakers, down from 132 in the previous parliament. -0-
