YEREVAN, June 19. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia has passed today in the third and final reading a draft law on granting tax and customs breaks to an international school in the resort town of Dilijan.
The bill was criticized by the parliamentary opposition, which demanded larger information about the project - the staff, the imported goods and equipment.
Deputy Finance Minister Suren Karayan said to lawmakers that this bill is only the first precedent to be followed by legislative proposals to grant tax and other breaks to other large-scale programs contributing to the development of Armenia. He said this approach is in line with the electoral program of the president, as well as with the five-year program of the government.
Dilijan International School (DIS) is a private charity project initiated by the co-head of Sberbank CIB Ruben Vardanyan. The total cost of the project is $ 150 million. The construction of the English-language boarding school, designed for over 600 local and foreign students, in the Armenia resort town of Dilijan began in April 2010 and is to be over in 2014. The annual tuition fee is $30,000. Scholarships will be available to distinguished students. The graduates of the school will be awarded International Baccalaureate diplomas. -0-
