YEREVAN, February 27. /ARKA/. Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan believes that Russian border guards (subordinated to Russian Federal Security Service-FSB) should leave Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport.

"I have not participated in such discussion (whether they should stay or leave), however, I believe that it would be correct to remove them (Russian border guards) from the airport. This is my personal opinion ... We will protect our country's borders, but I am not sure they (Russians) will do the same," he told reporters in parliament.

He said the issue may have been discussed with "law enforcement or other responsible authorities."

"It has been proved several times that they (Russian border guards) did not protect Armenia's borders. I am not saying that they did everything possible to make these borders even more vulnerable. They were deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh and what did they do? Were they deployed to escort the Armenian population out of Karabakh? And should we wait for them to come some day and escort me and you out? (of Armenia)" he said.

The presence of Russian border guards at Armenia's major airport is not stipulated by the1992 agreement between Armenia and Russia on the status of Russian border troops in Armenia.-0-
