Armenian parliament to again debate on electoral amendments
YEREVAN, October 23 /ARKA/. The Tsarukyan and Yelk factions in the Armenian parliament have collected enough signatures under a petition to convenes an extraordinary session for repeat debates on major amendments to the Electoral Code, drafted by the government of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for snap general elections, slated for December.

The parliament failed October 22 to pass the amendments, which the government says are designed to facilitate the conduct of free and transparent elections. The amendments are being opposed by the Republican Party of Armenia that still controls the bulk of seats in the National Assembly.

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutyun said in a statement it will participate in the early parliamentary elections, but warned that the hasty adoption of the amendments may be fraught with serious negative consequences.

Naira Zohrabyan from the Tsarukyan bloc said the petition was signed also by several lawmakers form the Republican Party and though the Dashnaktsutyun refused to sign the petition it promised not to hinder the repeat debates on the amendments and will vote for them.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned on October 16. The resignation was necessary for the dismissal of the National Assembly and the conduct snap parliamentary elections. The parliamentary elections are expected to take place on December 10. -0-
