Armenian parliament votes down Karabakh recognition bill
YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. The Armenian parliament voted down the motion submitted by the opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party calling for formal recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Thursday, Novosti-Armenia reported.

Most of the parliament factions have boycotted the vote, including the ruling coalition of Republican Party of Armenia and Orinats Yerkir, Prosperous Armenia, as well as the Armenian National Congress opposition party.

Only 10 out of 109 parliament deputies present voted for the bill, one abstained. N.V. –0—

The bill anticipates formal recognition of de-facto status of Artsakh (Armenian name for Karabakh) as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic meets all international law requirements to be defined a sovereign state.

The document describes relations after the recognition and specifies the rights and obligations of Armenia in securing and strengthening security in Artsakh, protecting Armenia’s national interests and contributing to post-conflict processes.

Heritage has produced a string of bills since 2007 urging the parliament to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, but the majority kept voting down the bill saying it is not an opportune time for the bill when the peace process in under way. –0--
