YEREVAN, January 27. /ARKA/. Speaking at a meeting of the governing Republican Party of Armenia on January 26, president Serzh Sargsyan said he did not welcome the return of Gagik Tsarukyan to politics. Tsarukyan, one of the wealthiest Armenian businessmen and the founder of the Prosperous Armenia party, announced late last year he would contest the upcoming parliamentary elections, slated for early April this year.

"I want to be brief - I did not welcome the return of Gagik Tsarukyan to politics. As regards establishment of  alliances or participation of different political forces  in the elections - I think it  is  a positive development,"  Sargsyan was quoted as saying by his press office.

“Gagik Tsarukyan’s return  to politics was not masterminded by the Republican Party of Armenia,’ deputy parliament speaker Eduard Sharmazanov said to reporters after the meeting.

"Gagik Tsarukyan is neither what is called ‘false opposition.’ The Republican party of Armenia is not concerned about the emergence of various alliances and unions, and is ready to compete with them in the elections," Sharmazanov said.

In comments on ex-prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan’s decision to leave the ranks of the party Sharmazanov said:  "The party is a living organism’ some people may leave it, others may join. In recent months, some 11,000 people joined the Republican Party of Armenia."

According to him, Abrahamayan’s decision to terminate his membership in the party  will not make it weaker. ‘The party will close its ranks to contest the upcoming polls,’ he said.-0-
