Armenian president urges sides to continue search for way out of crisis
YEREVAN, May 2. /ARKA/. Armenia’s president Armen Sarkissian issued a statement Wednesday urging the authorities and the opposition to continue negotiations to find a way out of the political turmoil.

“Yesterday, the National Assembly failed to elect the country’s prime minister,” he said in his statement.

“I deeply regret that the political crisis continues despite the fact that everyone says that it threatens the future of the country," the statement says. Sarkissian noted that the attention of all is now on the actions of political forces.

The president urged the political forces to use the next seven days to continue meetings to overcome the crisis, adding that it will serve the nation’s common interests.

Tens of thousands of supporters of Armenia's protest leader, Nikol Pashinyan, have resumed today morning civil disobedience actions across the country, blocking key roads and government buildings.

Pashinyan’s bid to become Armenia’s interim prime minister fell eight votes short of the 53 he needed to secure a majority in the 105-seat National Assembly on May 1. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia, chaired by former prime minister and two-time president Serzh Sargsyan, voted against Pashinyan.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, in case prime minister is not elected, new election is to be held seven days after the vote. A candidate must be backed by at least one third of the total number of deputies. If no prime minister is elected by a majority vote, then the National Assembly dissolves and new election is to be held. -0-.
