Armenian prosecutors initiate criminal case against opposition
YEREVAN, April 16. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Office of Prosecutor General said today it has initiated a criminal case in connection with mass unrest in Yerevan.

In a statement the Office of Prosecutor General said  starting from April 13, a parliament member  Nikol Pashinyan has been organizing rallies in Yerevan by repeatedly violating the requirements of the law On Freedom of Assembly,  preventing the free movement of residents of the capital and their implementation of their other rights, as well as the normal activities of business and other entities.

The Prosecutor General's Office said that despite numerous warnings of the police, the protesters violently broke into the building of the Yerevan State University on April 13, and on April 14 into the Public Radio building. 

According to the statement, the protesters damaged  the property of these organizations, as well as inflicted bodily injuries on citizens who protected these facilities.

It said also in the morning of April 16,  the rally participants moved towards Baghramyan Avenue, trying to bypass the riot police and refusing to obey the lawful demands of the law enforcement agencies. The Prosecutor General's Office noted also that protesters damaged public and private property on Baghramyan Avenue, used violence against policemen, jeopardizing public security.

It said the criminal case has been launched on grounds of part 1 and 2 of Article 225 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (organization of mass riots accompanied by violence, pogroms, arson, destruction or damage to property, use of firearms, explosives or explosive devices or providing armed resistance to a representative of power) and part 1 of Article 225.1 --0--
