YEREVAN, August 23. /ARKA/. The leaders of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) parliament met today with the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces to discuss security issues, following a series of breach of the ceasefire by Azerbaijani troops, the press service of Artsakh National Assembly said.

The meeting was prompted by a recent statement made by Maxim Seleznyov, a counsellor-envoy at the Russian embassy in Armenia, who said in an interview that Russian peacekeepers will not move a single centimeter from the current Lachin corridor until a new road linking Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia is put into operation.

According to the Russian peacekeepers, the new road (which is under construction) linking Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia will have the same status as the current corridor running through Lachin, and all components of security will be preserved, beginning with a 5-kilometer security zone and ending with the placement of checkpoints of the Russian peacekeeping forces.

Regarding the latest developments, the command of the Russian peacekeeping forces pointed out that it had made the necessary conclusions about the August incidents, and at the same time assured that they would make additional efforts to prevent similar violations in the future and to ensure proper security for the population of Nagorno-Karabakh.

In early August, Armenian authorities in Artsakh said that the Azerbaijani side, through Russian peacekeepers, demanded that a new connection be organized between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia along a new route.

The remaining Armenian residents of the town of Berdzor (Lachin) and the villages of Aghavno and Sus that are situated along the current Lachin corridor were told to leave before August 25 as no Russian peacekeepers will be left in the territory after that deadline.

Official Yerevan then announced that construction of the Armenian section of the road alternative to the Lachin corridor is already underway. The road is planned to be completed by the beginning of spring 2023. -0-
