Azerbaijan's military spending in 2020 grew by 17 percent, while Armenia's dropped by 2.6 percent- SIPRI

Azerbaijan’s 17 per cent increase in military spending was the largest relative increase among countries in Eastern Europe in 2020, according to new data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

YEREVAN, April 26. /ARKA/. Azerbaijan’s 17 per cent increase in military spending was the largest relative increase among countries in Eastern Europe in 2020, according to new data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The rise in spending was largely driven by the conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In contrast, Armenia’s military spending fell by 2.6 per cent in 2020. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are among the top ten militarized nations, according to SIPRI.

The five biggest spenders in 2020, which together accounted for 62 per cent of global military expenditure, were the United States, China, India, Russia and the United Kingdom. Military spending by China grew for the 26th consecutive year.

Five of the top 10 countries with the highest level of military spending in the world are in the Middle East: Oman (military expenditure is 11% of GDP, Saudi Arabia (8.4%), Kuwait (6.5%), Israel (5.6%) and Jordan (5%). The other five are Algeria (6.7%), Azerbaijan (5.4%), Armenia (4.9%), Morocco (4.3%) and Russia (4.3%).
