YEREVAN, May 14. /ARKA/. The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia have expressed their desire to resolve the situation in the region, said European Council President Charles Michel after the 4-hour long trilateral meeting with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Brussels on May 14.

"The main subject of the meeting between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan was the normalization of relations between the two countries. We also discussed the border demarcation between the two countries," Radio Azatutyun quoted Michel as saying.

According to him, the main goal of the EU in organizing negotiations is to achieve a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"We are ready to organize as many meetings in the Brussels format as necessary," Michel said.

The Armenian government said the sides discussed a set of issues such as unblocking of regional transport and economic infrastructure, border demarcation and security, the agreement on the settlement of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the need to delegate the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the release of Armenian prisoners held in Baku, the issue of missing persons and other humanitarian issues.

It said also that an agreement was reached to continue discussions on June 1 in Chisinau within the framework of the European Political Community summit with the participation of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the President of Azerbaijan, the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany and the President of the European Council, and in July at a trilateral meeting of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the President of Azerbaijan and the President of the European Council in Brussels.

This was the fifth meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders held under European mediation. Michel had held bilateral talks with Pashinyan on Saturday evening and with Aliyev on Sunday morning.

The talks came a day after fresh clashes erupted on the border between the two countries. On Friday, the Armenian defense ministry announced that one Armenian soldier had been killed and two others wounded by Azerbaijani forces.

On Thursday, according to reports, an Azerbaijani soldier was killed and four Armenian soldiers wounded in other clashes.

Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of seeking to “undermine the talks” in Brussels and said there was “very little” chance of signing a peace accord with Aliyev during the meeting. -0
