YEREVAN, July 18. /ARKA/. The Belgian House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution at a plenary session condemning Azerbaijan's military attack on Artsakh Armenians and violations of international law.
The adopted resolution notes that Azerbaijan's actions against Nagorno-Karabakh and its Armenian population contradict the fundamental norms of international law, Armenpress reports.
The Belgian legislature emphasizes that sustainable and long-term peace in the region is possible only with mutual respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The resolution also clearly condemns the threats and rhetoric of the Azerbaijani authorities in the context of the "Western Azerbaijan" discourse.
The resolution also touches upon the illegal detention of former leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh by Baku and unclear trials. A call was made for Azerbaijan to release all Armenian prisoners and guarantee a fair trial.
The House of Representatives demands that Azerbaijan ensure the preservation of the cultural and religious heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh and calls for allowing a UNESCO mission to assess the damage caused.
The resolution welcomes the initiative to conclude a peace treaty and emphasizes the urgency of its signing, calling on both sides to comply with the provisions of this agreement.
The House of Representatives calls on the Government of Belgium to support an international investigation into war crimes, expand its consular presence in Armenia, and deepen humanitarian and military cooperation with official Yerevan.
The adopted resolution also calls on the EU to apply targeted sanctions against human rights violators, expand the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, and reconsider relations with Azerbaijan if Baku does not show a real willingness to achieve peace.
