Beyond TRIPP: Alen Simonyan on Russia's Possible Participation in Infrastructure Projects in Armenia
YEREVAN, February 10. /ARKA/. Russia may be involved in the construction, reconstruction, and operation of infrastructure facilities in Armenia outside the framework of the TRIPP (Trump's Route for International Peace and Prosperity), stated National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan.

"Regarding TRIPP, I noted during my recent visit to Moscow that there is a reality in which the Russian side could participate in the construction, reconstruction, and operation of other infrastructure. I cannot imagine Russia's participation in TRIPP itself," Simonyan said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

According to him, the Armenian side views this format as constructive, and the Russian side can present relevant initiatives for discussion.

TRIPP and Other Transport Projects

Commenting on TRIPP, Simonyan noted that, despite its Armenian-American format, the movement of cargo through Armenia is not limited solely to this project.

"Deliveries of flour, wheat, or petroleum products can be carried out along the same roads and through the same infrastructure, but outside of TRIPP. Armenia is ready to consider proposals, discuss them, and ensure their operation," he said.

According to the speaker of parliament, similar mechanisms had been discussed previously, but it was with the United States that the project was implemented and politically formalized.

Alternative Routes

The issue of possibly taking into account Russia's interests in the context of TRIPP, according to Simonyan, requires separate discussions involving both the Armenian and American sides."TRIPP is not the only route passing through Armenia. Numerous infrastructure routes exist and will continue to exist," he emphasized.

Moscow's Position

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Izvestia on Tuesday that Moscow is ready to discuss the parameters of its possible participation in the TRIPP project with Yerevan.

"Regarding this project, we have reserved our position. The details of the Armenian-American initiative remain to be studied. We are ready to consult with our partners in Yerevan to discuss both the parameters and possible Russian participation in one form or another," the diplomat stated.

Galuzin recalled that Armenia's railway network is managed by a subsidiary of Russian Railways until 2038, the country uses the Russian gauge, and Russian border guards are stationed on the border with Iran.

"Armenia's membership in the EAEU must also be taken into account. Under these circumstances, it is clear that our partners cannot do without Russia," the deputy minister emphasized.

Galuzin also noted that significant progress on unblocking communications in the region has already been made within the framework of the trilateral format of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan at the deputy prime minister level.
